My orthopedic doctor has diagnosed my knee pain as injured cartilage. Gratefully nothing is torn or extremely messed up but he very calmly explained that it needed to heal and in the meantime, I should stop doing all things which cause it to hurt. He carefully “recommended” that I refrain from any type of pounding on the knee or anything where the knee is in flexion. So of course running is out. FOR 6 WEEKS! Any type of plyo is out too…a big boot camp favorite. Truly, if I had been told no running for 6 weeks a year or more before, it would have felt like a death sentence. I was so tied to running being my main form of training and social outlet for me. Running is still my favorite thing to do, but I feel oddly at peace with taking a break right now. Official training for the half marathon season doesn’t begin until mid-July so this is a perfect time to be down if it were going to happen at any time. Frankly I am surprised it didn’t happen before now….last year I covered some serious mileage. So I am still thinking about what my strategy will be over the next 6 weeks. Definitely strength training….runs will talk a back seat to longer walks….perhaps with the sandbag….maybe another round of P90x (minus the plyo)! I really dislike swimming, but that is always the recommendation when you need no impact workouts. Perhaps I will make myself do a few and who knows…maybe I will learn to love it.
