How are your resolutions for 2014 coming along? Did you promise yourself (and others) that you’d run a ½ marathon this year? Well, the good news is, there’s still time! Hal Higdon’s novice ½ marathon training program is 12 weeks long. Beginning your new routine this week or next will give you exactly the right amount of time to run in Jacksonville’s Thanksgiving Day (November 27th) Subaru Distance Classic Half Marathon. If that option feels a little too ambitious, you have another local race before the end of the year! The Jacksonville Bank Marathon and Half Marathon will be held on Sunday, December 28th. Whether these great Jacksonville races fulfill one of your New Year’s resolution or just end your year on a high note, I hope you run strong! If you’d like to learn more about how strength training and running go hand-in-hand, give me a call! I’d love to help you optimize your race...

Get the Creative Juices Flowing

Get the Creative Juices Flowing

We’ve already talked about the many ways that exercise can help you physically and mentally. But, did you know that exercise can also help you be more creative? Getting away from technology and into the beautiful outdoors is particularly beneficial to getting the creative juices flowing! University of Kansas professor, Ruth Ann Atchley, states in the Chicago Tribune, “The natural environment has a characteristic that some call ‘soft fascination.’ This means that environmental stimuli are emotionally positive.” In addition to natural beauty, the type of exercise you choose is important. Workouts that don’t involve much stimulation (think repetitive movements) are better than highly engaging sports, at least from a creativity standpoint. In other words, you’ll likely have more creative thoughts during a 3-mile jog than downhill skiing on a black diamond trail. Maintaining a regular exercise regime may bring even more creative benefits! An article in the Huff Post presents the finds of a study in the journal Frontiers in Human Neuroscience determining that “regular exercisers do better on tests of creativity than their more sedentary peers.” Researchers also concluded that “regular exercise seems to be associated with improved divergent and convergent thinking, which are considered the two components of creative thinking; the former involves thinking of multiple solutions for one problem, while the latter involves thinking of one solution for a problem,” according to the same study. Just another great reason to get outside and exercise! I’d love to hear from you! What type of workout gives you the greatest creative boost? Please reply in the comment section...

Jacksonville Bank Marathon, Half-Marathon, and 5k

The third, and final, race in the TRI 2B TUFF Challenge will be held on Sunday, December 29th at 7 a.m. This event starts and finishes at the beautiful Bolles School Campus (7400 San Jose Blvd in Jacksonville, FL). The Jacksonville Bank Marathon, Half-Marathon, and 5k takes you through the numerous residential neighborhoods in the Mandarin area and returns along a route on the St. Johns River. This course is fast and flat, in addition to being primarily in the shade. If you need one more reason to participate, you might be excited to learn that you can qualify for the Boston Marathon with this race! The Jacksonville Bank Marathon and related events has been around for more than a decade. It tends to draw around 3,000 runners (for all races combined) and a moderate crowd of spectators. The Jacksonville Bank Marathon also had the distinction of making the Runner’s World list of top 10 events in 2011 for runners trying to run their “best 26.2 ever!” I hope to see you out on the course this December! Congratulations in advance to all of the TRI 2B TUFF Challenge...

Subaru Distance Classic

Subaru Distance Classic

The second race of the TRI 2B TUFF Challenge is rapidly approaching. The 30th Annual Subaru Distance Classic Half Marathon will be held on Thanksgiving Day, November 28, 2013. I have done this race each year since 2008 where I finished my first half marathon.  It remained my PR half marathon at 2:00:38 until just January of this year when I finally got under 2 hours! Back then it was the Outback Distance Classic and much more enjoyable.  There quit being beer after the race once Subaru took over as the race sponsor! J It is a really nice route….beginning on San Jose Boulevard and then loops around the Mandarin area of Jacksonville.  It takes you through some nice residential neighborhoods.  Parking is easier at this race too.  My secret has been to park at the Kmart parking lot because it is close to the start and access to indoor restaurants and heat! A portion of each race entry will be donated to the Mandarin Food Bank. In addition, collection bins for canned goods will be near the start area. If you don’t want the hassle of remembering to bring cans, you can also donate in $1 increments online as part of the registration process. This event draws about 6,000 runners and spectators (there’s a 6k too), so expect a good crowd for an early holiday morning! Plus, there’s a postrace party with plenty of refreshments (hoping for beer this year!)…a great way to begin the Thanksgiving food fest!   Note: The picture is of my first ever half marathon medal mentioned above! Very proud...

Jacksonville Marine Corps Half Marathon and 5k

Jacksonville Marine Corps Half Marathon and 5k

The weather is finally starting to cool a bit. In Jacksonville, that means that the best time of year to run! Over the next few weeks, we’ll be highlighting the three half marathons that make up the TRI 2B TUFF Challenge – the Jacksonville Marine Corps ½ Marathon in October, Distance Classic ½ Marathon in November, and the Jacksonville Bank ½ (or full) Marathon in December. First in the line-up is the Marine Corps ½ Marathon on October 5th. This race is celebrating its 10th anniversary! According to their website, more than 2,500 runners from more than 15 states will participate. Proceeds from this event are shared among numerous Marine Corps related charities. This is my favorite half of the series.  There is a great vibe to this race and the course is beautiful! Starting near EverBank Stadium, this route will take you past Metropolitan Park and across the river into the beautiful neighborhoods of Riverside. You’ll return across the river to finish at Metropolitan Park and be welcomed warmly by many of our country’s finest Marines! And, if at any point you feel yourself lacking motivation, keep an ear out for the chanting Marines that are completing the course in formation. They’ll help get you back on track. The post-event celebration includes numerous military displays, including weaponry and vehicles. Plus, there are many sponsor booths to peruse while enjoying post-race refreshments (i.e. beer)! The TRI 2B TUFF Challenge requires separate entry. After completing all three events mentioned above, you’ll receive a special TRI 2B TUFF...
